a few design tips to consider

I work closely with the client to make the best cabinets for their unique situation.  These are custom cabinets, made expressly for a particular place.  They can be anything you can think of, and indeed, should have elements that are specific to you -- that meet your special needs.

For example, the standard kitchen cabinet is made to a height of 36".  But if you are short statured, it is no problem to make your cabinets 34" high (or conversely, if you are taller, to make your cabinets 38").

I will help with design and will point out savings that can be made by making one decision over another.  I'll point out hardware options and any specialty items I'm aware of that would fit the design.  Oh, I have one idiosyncrasy, I hate particle board (even supposedly superior MDF) -- and will rarely undertake a project that uses it (although there are always exceptions ;-).

First of all, you need to think about the space the cabinet will occupy, and how you want to use it.  Go wild -- think of the perfect way the space would work for you and your family.  Do you need lots of shelf space, or maybe drawers?  What do you want covered by doors, and what do you want open?  Think about how you are going to use the space, then you will have an idea of the items it will need to hold and their sizes and requirements.

At this point you should have enough of an idea of what might work to make a rough sketch or two.  I know you'll say you can't draw at all, but I assure you, even a crude sketch helps immensely.  We will still talk about your project plenty, but a drawing helps us both know that we're talking about the same thing.

When I'm designing a cabinet (or entire wall or room of cabinets), I always draw it to scale.  This helps with deciding on proportions (should two doors be here, or three?).  I provide scale drawings and material specifications for all projects.

Once you've thought about your project and maybe made a sketch, it's time to contact me and talk details.  We'll talk woods and door types and hardware and finishes and much more.  I'll take some measurements and in a few days give you a firm bid on what it will cost to build your cabinets.
